The climb to Cilaos on the RN5 has more than 400 bends and single-lane tunnels; the roads up to Maïdo and Salazie string together hairpins and steep gradients. In a manual, that means hundreds of gear changes in a single day. What an automatic really changes is fatigue: both hands stay on the wheel and your attention on the road.
One reflex worth knowing on the way down: use engine braking — manual mode or the low position of the gearbox — rather than the pedal alone. On the long descents out of the cirques, that is what saves your brakes.

Is it easy to find an automatic car in Réunion?
No, and that is the first thing to know: the Réunionnais fleet is overwhelmingly manual. Automatics therefore go first, especially from July to September and during the austral school holidays. Book several weeks ahead rather than hoping to find one on arrival.
Is an automatic gearbox useful on the island's roads?

How do I book an automatic on Tropiloc?

Combien coûte une location ?La caution, comment ça marche
Une caution est déposée en agence au retrait du véhicule, puis restituée après la location si tout est en ordre. Elle n'est jamais débitée par Tropiloc : elle sert uniquement de garantie à l'agence, le temps de la location.
